Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6,5 billion.
Description of Subject Area: The interest in wind energy has increased rapidly in many parts of the world. The trend is that more and more wind farms are being built in previously low developed areas (e.g. offshore and forests). In offshore locations wind turbines are positioned in clusters which results in decreased energy production and increased fatigue loads due to wake effects. In forested areas, similar effects are seen due to the presence of the forest. There is currently a knowledge gap how severe these effects are for turbine performance and life length. The research team at Uppsala University Campus Gotland has a long experience of simulations of flows using CFD tools. The CFD models used today are able to accurately perform power output estimations of individual turbines. However there is currently a lack of an accurate load estimation model. In this project, a load estimation will be developed for usage in the CFD tools used in the research team. The ultimate goal is to bridge the above mentioned knowledge gap and also to perform production and load optimizations.
Dudies: As a PhD student in meteorology with a focus on wind energy, you participate in a research group that focuses on fluid mechanics around individual wind turbines and wind farms. This project focuses on further development of established numerical models to also include loads estimations. In addition to the work on research projects and graduate courses, you will participate in other activities within the section of wind energy these may consist of teaching and/or administrative work and will be up to 20% of the work hours. The position is located at Campus Gotland.
Qualifications For a PhD student it is required that you are admitted or will be admitted to research education where the ability to follow the research education is essential. The applicant should have an academic degree in energy engineering and/or meteorology. Knowledge in mathematics and physics is required alongside experience in using advanced CFD tools and knowledge of programming in object oriented languages.
Desirable Experience in the development of advanced numerical simulation tools is meritorious. We prefer that have academic and/or industrial experience in the field of wind Power.
Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
How to apply: The application should include a letter describing the applicant and his or her qualifications. It should also include CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis and publications. We encourage you to provide details of referees and/or attach a letter of recommendation.
Uppsala University has an ambition to support equality between genders. Since the larger parts of employees in this category are men we do encourage female applicants.
