Understanding the complex, ever-changing planet on which we live, how it supports life, and how human activities affects its ability to do so in the future is one of the greatest intellectual challenges facing humanity.

The department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University with research programs in Geophysics, Solid Earth Geology, Air, Water and Landscape Science, and Palaeobiology has been described as one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. A result of several mergers between smaller departments in 1998, the department now boasts a exclusively broad range of subfields as well as several research groups of very high international standard. The range of subfields is an exceptional advantage, offering new exciting opportunities for synergy between different research areas, while making it possible to offer a uniquely comprehensive education in the Earth sciences to our students.
