NEEM (The North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling)
Project description
The North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling, NEEM, is an international ice core research project in which Sweden and 13 other countries are taking part. The camp is situated at the north-western part of the Greenlandic ice sheet at 77.45°N, 51.06°W. The goal with the project is to retrieve a deep ice core with ice from the previous warm period, the Eemian, which started about 130 000 years ago and lasted for about 15 000 years.
Uppsala University has been granted ice sawdust samples from the core to study a cosmogenic isotope called 10Be. This isotope can tell us about past conditions on Earth; about how strong the geomagnetic field was, how active the sun was and how the climate was varying.
