Dianne Edwards, Professor at Cardiff University and President of the Linnean Society of London, have focused her research on fossil plants, principally from Wales in Great Brittain, but also from other parts of the World. She has discovered and described a great amount of early plants and through her studies been able to show that the biological manifoldness was considerably larger during the Silurian and early Devonian period than than what was earlier believed. Her research has shed light on the evolutionary processes that took place during this time when the first species colonized land. Edwards has also with the help of fossils shown that many fires took place during the Silurian.
