Popular Scientific Presentation
Greeks, Romans and Vikings all used the power of the wind to sail over the seas. Today this same power is harnessed by both large and small scale wind turbines and it has become a major source of renewable energy. In order to increase wind power’s share of our ever growing demand we need to enhance our understanding of the wind itself, e.g. how it flows, how it is influenced by the earth’s surface and in particular how it behaves around a wind turbine’s blades as well as behind the turbine. Achieving this is a challenge as it requires a clear picture of the air’s flow ranging from few millimeters over the blade to about 3 kilometers behind the turbine!
The overall objective of Uppsala University Campus Gotland’s group is to maintain and further develop knowledge of wind energy though research, innovation and education.
